Our Property Portfolio extends across our end-to-end food supply chain; covering Retail stores of varying sizes / formats and also an extensive & diverse range of Logistics & Manufacturing sites. In fact, Morrisons is the largest fresh food Manufacturer in the UK.

Following internal review, we are investing to grow our internal engineering capability & subject matter expertise within our Property Function.

As a result, we have an exciting opportunity to join our business as Property Engineering Manager (Mechanical Movement & Handling). The successful candidate will work as part of the senior team to own all aspects of Mechanical Movement Assets (E.g Goods & Passenger Lifts, Dock Levellers, Loading Bays, MHE, Fast Acting Doors, etc) as a subject matter expert and provide leadership regarding design, solutions, specifications & standards.

Specifically, you'll create strategies to ensure our estate is fit for purpose both now and into the future, is maintained correctly and, using data / intelligence / expertise, inform ongoing investment decision making.This role is part of an exciting new team covering key engineering disciplines. Therefore you'll be working closely with other engineering professionals to drive this agenda consistently and through great teamwork. The specific areas we are focussing on are listed as follows:

  • Electrical

  • Refrigeration

  • Building Fabric & Built Environment

  • Mechanical Services (Utilities inc HVAC, Boilers)

  • Equipment

  • Architectural & Civil

There is a requirement to work 13 Saturdays Feb-Feb, these days are shorter - 6 hours - and are generally used for team meetings, project planning and strategic work.

Responsibilities (this list is not exhaustive)

Design; Specifications & Standards

  • Design solutions that help improve the customer journey

  • Design out maintenance requirements to reduce breakdowns and improve equipment uptime

  • Resolve existing design issues to improve customer perception and reduce customer complaints

Construction & Installation; Oversight, Governance & Audit

  • Ensure systems installed are done so to the agreed quality standard and design and are fit for purpose before handing over to the maintenance team including the completion of commissioning certification

  • Creates strategies for long term (3 - 10 yrs) capital investment into Morrisons estate for the Engineering specialism.

Maintenance; Specifications & Standards

  • Set the specifications and standards for all planned maintenance requirements for mechanical movement & handling systems across retail, logistics and manufacturing

  • Work with the relevant teams and ensures that the right SLA's and KPI's are in place and that relevant contracts reflect these requirements

  • Ensures we are safe and legally compliant at all times and has M.I in place and plans to ensure we remain so

  • Works alongside the remote monitoring bureaus to develop and evolve our predictive capability

  • Ensures that mechanical movement equipment is owned and cared for within the operation through effective governance (e.g. Training Protocols, Guidance, Signage, Incident review / escalation/ root cause review)

Knowledge / Upskill / Training

  • Educate colleagues & stakeholders so they have a good basic understanding of mechanical systems and their design limitations

  • Ensure colleagues understand and know what they need to do to help improve equipment uptime and reduce breakdowns that impact on sales / productivity

Sustainability & Continuous improvement

  • Lead on specifications and standards of plant and equipment that helps us achieve our Net Zero carbon reduction strategy

  • Work with relevant teams and use data, insight and business intelligence to create capital replacement and investment strategies
